These are all Quora questions I get often, mostly by people who seem to think they’re taking the morally superior ground. I don’t think they’d be fun at parties, but who knows? Maybe they would. I don’t care to find out.

Horror gets crapped on a lot by people for a variety of reasons. Typically because horror allows them an easy blame, a way out. If you can blame horror films/books/media, then apparently you don’t have to take responsibility for your bad life choices.

Well, allow me to disabuse you of that notion. Ultimately, you are responsible for your crap choices. I don’t make those choices for you. If you make good choices, then you are responsible for those, too. Not me, not a horror film, not your mommy or daddy, not that dog that keeps telling you to kill your neighbor with a garden hose… YOU. You are the one who chooses to act on those impulses rather than get help.

If you try to blame a book or film, that’s just sad.

Should you not watch horror films at all as a young adult, because later in life you will grow to detest, revolt, and disgust the things you have seen in them, and want them out of your head?

I started watching horror films as a kid, let alone a young adult. I’m 44 as of this writing and I don’t detest any of it. I’m not revolted or disgusted by the things I’ve seen in them. Nor do I want them out of my head.

If you are the type of person who cannot distinguish between reality and fantasy, then perhaps horror, science fiction, fantasy, or any type of fiction is not for you. Oh, and stay away from romance, too, because that will definitely cause you to have some messed up images in your head.

People who should avoid horror (or any genre):

  1. Those who cannot separate reality and fantasy.
  2. Those who do not like gore.
  3. Those who don’t want to watch it.

People would do better to spend more time focusing on what they would like to do rather than what they think others “should” do. Keep your eyes on your own paper, and let others enjoy watching eyes get plucked out.

Are people who like to watch gore horror movies mentally sane?

Yes. I’ve answered variations of this question before and the answer is always the same. People who watch gory horror films are as mentally sound as the general public. Mental illness has nothing to do with what genre of films a person enjoys.

Aren’t kids afraid to play in horror movies?

No. I’ve gone into this in a couple of answers:

Do kids who star in horror films suffer from PTSD after filming?

No, they don’t. There are extremely strict regulations in place when dealing with child actors that protect them from harm.

They are also typically precocious children who are well aware of the difference between fantasy and reality.

For example: A friend of mine who was involved in the making of a horror film with a child in it told me that the “monsters” were kept out of the child’s view and the director and crew helped the child to react appropriately by telling them what to do. Sometimes, mommy would go into hiding to elicit the child to cry. No permanent damage done, as mommy would return once they got the shot (and they move quickly with children because labor laws with filming children are strict).

There has never been a case of PTSD for a child making a horror film for the reasons above.

Are child actors negatively affected by being in horror movies?

No, they aren’t negatively affected by being in horror movies.

Children are not stupid. Most children can be taught to understand the difference between real and pretend.
